![]() Based on his polar experiences, Wegener suggested that the continents were like icebreaking ships plowing through ice sheets. What do you think the problem was? To his colleagues, his greatest problem was that he had no plausible mechanism for how the continents could move through the oceans. Wegener’s idea seemed so outlandish at the time that he was ridiculed by other scientists. He called his hypothesis continental drift. The supercontinent later broke apart and the continents having been moving into their current positions ever since. In his book he said that around 300 million years ago the continents had all been joined into a single landmass he called Pangaea, meaning “all earth” in ancient Greek. New editions with additional evidence were published later in the decade. Wegener put his idea and his evidence together in his book The Origin of Continents and Oceans, first published in 1915. Alfred Wegener suggested that continental drift occurred as continents cut through the ocean floor, in the same way as this icebreaker plows through sea ice. Wegener’s Continental Drift Hypothesisįigure 1. He advocated using scientific evidence to find the “truth.” As his colleague, are you convinced? Let’s explore. ![]() ![]() Wegener put together a tremendous amount of evidence that the continents had been joined. ![]() Wegener, The Origins of Continents and Oceans, first published in 1915. Further, we have to be prepared always for the possibility that each new discovery, no matter what science furnishes it, may modify the conclusions we draw. It is only by combining the information furnished by all the earth sciences that we can hope to determine ‘truth’ here, that is to say, to find the picture that sets out all the known facts in the best arrangement and that therefore has the highest degree of probability. Scientists still do not appear to understand sufficiently that all earth sciences must contribute evidence toward unveiling the state of our planet in earlier times, and that the truth of the matter can only be reached by combining all this evidence. ![]()

Scanning laser entoptic perimetry is of particular interest to assess diabetic retinopathy, a leading cause of blindness where early detection is a key factor in visual preservation. More recent studies recognize this modality as the method to measure entoptic phenomena, as it can offer significant retinal detail as it pertains to foveal capillary detail, the size of the foveal avascular zone (FAZ) and macular blood flow, with greater accuracy than more invasive methods, such as fluorescein angiography. 1 It was also helpful in cases where significant media opacities existed, where-if the illumination of a closed eye induced shadows-it correlated with good retinal and macular function. Screening ApplicationsIn the late 1990s, the application of this afterimage was used clinically to grossly measure potential acuity, as patients’ lack of perception of their vessels correlates highly with poor macular function and markedly reduced acuity. Here, entoptic phenomenon is perceived as vitreous floater secondary to posterior vitreous detachment. ![]() 2 In fact, it is this observation, which led to the conclusion that there must be a rapid mechanism of image creation and erasure as the foundation of normal visual processing. 1 It differs from a real image, particularly in that it does not track with eye or retinal movement due to the direct and constant relationship with the photoreceptor layer. HistoryEntoptic phenomena were first described by Johann Purkinje in the early 1800s, to describe the fleeting, black afterimage of retinal vasculature, later coined the ‘Purkinje tree.’ 1 This phenomena occurs due to the location and pattern of the branching retinal vascular ‘tree’ in front of the photoreceptor layer, casting a shadow that is only induced when the anterior segment of the eye is illuminated. This month, let’s evaluate what significance, if any, these reflections hold to us as eye care practitioners. 1,2 The presence or absence of different entoptic phenomena can raise red flags for posterior and anterior abnormalities, and even refractive and convergence conditions-making them potential markers of disease presence and progression. The results of this study of two microvascular preparations strongly suggest that in the human eye the blue field entoptic phenomenon is produced by leukocytes flowing within the macular retinal microvasculature.Oftentimes, when our patients are sitting behind the slit lamp during a routine examination, we hear them cry, “Wow, I can see the reflection of my blood vessels!” The image that appears to them is an instance of entoptic phenomena (EP), a phrase derived from the Greek words ‘inside’ and ‘light’ or ‘vision’, which describes the ability of an individual to perceive substances endogenous to their own eye, such as retinal vessels or vitreous opacities. The particles were observed in terminal arteriols capillaries, and post-capillary venules where they were not obscured by red blood cells. Under higher magnification, the particles appeared brighter than the plasma gaps between red blood cells and were demonstrated to be leukocytes by morphology, by specific staining and by typical behavioral movement. The appearance of the particles and their movement simulated the blue field entoptic particle motion. In both preparations, low magnification video-microscopy using 430 nm illumination produced a field of particles, which were brighter than the background, flowing within a network of dark vessels. In the rat cremaster alternating observations were made using transmission illumination at 430 nm and epi-illumination fluorescence microscopy with leukocytes rendered fluorescent by intravenous Quinacrine. In the wing of the hibernating bat, microvascular flow was simultaneously videotaped under transmission illumination at 430 nm and under unfiltered illumination. ![]() The cellular source of the blue field entoptic phenomenon was investigated in two microvascular preparations using video-microscopy with lighting conditions similar to those under which the entoptic phenomenon is visualized within the human eye. ![]() ![]() ![]() He makes opposing coaches and players change the way they game plan or play. ![]() Just after 8:45 pm, at a speed of two knots, the Hunley rammed 200 pounds of black gunpowder into the unsuspecting ship. Calm conditions were essential for the sub to navigate, and steer itself to an enemy target. A nearly full moon illuminated the calm ocean waters, which rarely occur along the southeastern coast in mid-winter given the prevalence of frontal weather systems, the weather and ocean conditions were perfect for the first naval warfare between a submarine and a surface war-ship. Soon after the fateful encounter between the world’s most famous submarine and the frigate ship that was patrolling the waters of Charleston, South Carolina, as part of the Union’s plan to starve southern cities of supplies, questions began to swirl about the fate of the submerged vessel nobody ever saw again after the great explosion.īy February 1864, Charleston was penned in by the Union navy unable to break the blockade stranglehold which included dozens of ships patrolling the waters off the Charleston Harbor, Sullivan’s Island and the Isle of Palms north of the city.ĭesperate to wreak terror into the Union fleet, the Hunley’s crew of eight volunteers hand cranked the Hunley – a crudely designed, thinly ironed submersible – through the Breach Inlet at the north end of Sullivan’s Island on a calm, cold February 17, 1864. The mighty ship sank in a mere matter of moments. Hunley – the Confederate submarine which rammed a super charged torpedo perched on a 16-foot extended spar that was driven into the USS Housatonic. It remained under Lowcountry waters until its raising on August 8, 2000.More mystery than history surrounds the intriguing sinking of the H.L. However, later efforts by Smith and Broadfoot to recover the Hunley were unsuccessful. He gave one clue which would evade other divers and investigators for much of the 20 th century and would turn out to be correct-that the Hunley lie just outside, on the seaward side, of the wreck of the Housatonic. Diver Angus Smith wrote in an 1876 letter to Beauregard that he had found the sub, as part of his contract to recover Confederate wrecks in the harbor. The Hunley then disappeared, and many would speculate over the years as to its location. Unlike the sub’s second and third sinking, the divers were able to find the Hunley in the dark waters relatively easily, but the grim job still took them almost a week to complete.ĭespite another fatal accident in October 1863 and loss of another crew, a third and final crew would successfully attack the Housatonic on February 17, 1864. While Charleston was being shelled, the divers attached chains and ropes to the Hunley so it could be lifted to the surface. Following the accident, Beauregard quickly called for the sub’s recovery and hired two local divers, Angus Smith and David Broadfoot, to pull her up from the harbor floor.Ĭlothed in near two-hundred pound canvas diving suits and helmets, Smith and Broadfoot dove to the bottom of the murky harbor floor. Five crew members lost their lives, while three survived. A surviving crew member, Charles Hasker stated that the wake from a passing steamer caused the Hunley to sink, while an official report later stated that the sub became entangled in lines on the dock, forcing it on its side, filling open hatches with water.
